Staff-level (L6) BPS loop replaces some standard rounds with two named segments: **Scope & Impact** (org-level decision radius) and **Architecture** (full-project architectural walkthrough). Coding is reduced or skipped; the depth of the architectural narrative is the deciding signal.
Requirements
Round 1 — Scope & Impact (60 min, often a senior manager / director):
Walk through a project you led recently in detail. The interviewer probes the same architecture and decisions as a deep-dive but also asks about org context — how the project was scoped, who you influenced, where the technical direction came from, and what was given vs invented.
Questions on org structure, scope of ownership, cross-team partnerships, and how you measure scope of influence at the staff level.
Reverse questions (what they expect from a Staff candidate) consistently land on: "redefine the problem from the ground up, not just scale the existing solution."
Round 2 — Architecture (60 min, often a Principal Engineer):
Present a complex project (multiple subsystems, latency-sensitive, ML or infra-heavy). Bringing a prepared architecture diagram is strongly recommended.
The interviewer probes nearly every component: latency budget, model choice, infra orchestration, failure modes, on-call story.
The bar tilts toward insight and root-cause framing rather than implementation detail.
Notes
A consistent failure mode reported by candidates: presenting incremental improvements to an existing system ("we improved latency by 30%") instead of root-cause re-architectures ("we eliminated the latency by re-thinking the request boundary"). The Staff bar explicitly grades the latter.
Reverse questions are highly informative: ask the interviewer directly what they expect at the Staff bar in their team, and tailor your second-half stories to that.
The BPS loop is typically 2 rounds total, not the standard 4–5; outcome arrives within 1–2 weeks.
A reported pain point: feedback after a fail is sparse — recruiters often decline to share which round caused the rejection. Plan to debrief with peers immediately after the round while detail is fresh.
The Architecture round consistently rewards redefining the problem boundary over scaling an existing solution. Candidates who present a 30%-latency-improvement story land at Senior; candidates who present a request-shape change that eliminated the latency entirely land at Staff. Pre-script your story so the framing leads with the boundary change.
Preparation
Prepare a 1-page architecture diagram for your strongest project — printed or on a slide. Spend 1–2 minutes presenting it, then let the interviewer drive.
For Scope & Impact, pre-script answers to: "What is your team's scope today?" "How many engineers across how many teams did you influence?" "What technical direction did you set vs follow?"
For Architecture, pre-bake a 2-level deep dive: high-level boxes-and-arrows, then drilling into one component (e.g. the inference pipeline) with latency / capacity numbers.
Re-frame each story around root-cause redesign. Avoid "we improved X by Y%" framings — replace with "we removed the need for X entirely by …"
Bring a 1-page architecture diagram (PDF) and a 1-page "scope summary" (teams involved, your decision rights, the alternatives you rejected). Both get referenced repeatedly across the two rounds.
