Standard MLE / Research onsite deep-dive round: walk the interviewer through one of your published papers or a shipped ML project. The interviewer goes deep on the technical detail, picks at edge cases, and steers the conversation toward how the work would transfer to Roblox's product surface.
Requirements
Pick one paper or shipped project; budget 10 minutes to set up context and the rest of the slot for Q&A.
Be prepared to defend every methodological choice: dataset, baselines, evaluation protocol, training hyperparameters, ablations.
The interviewer will ask how the technique would apply to a Roblox-specific product (recommendation, in-game economy, moderation, creator tooling). Have a concrete bridge ready.
Notes
The interviewer typically derails the rehearsed pitch within 5 minutes by asking a sharp question on a specific detail. Plan for one paper to absorb the full slot; have a backup paper ready but assume you may not get to it.
Common drill-down topics: dataset construction biases, statistical significance of reported gains, choice of baselines (why those and not stronger ones), what would break the result, how the method scales.
Roblox-specific bridging questions appear consistently: "How would this apply to recommending games to a 9-year-old?" / "How would this generalize to user-generated content where the label distribution is non-stationary?"
Failure mode: presenting a paper that is too narrow for cross-application, or one where the candidate cannot defend the experimental setup. Pick a paper you co-led and know cold.
When two interviewers are present (reported in some loops), expect at least one to be from an adjacent field; tune your explanation to land for a generalist ML audience.
Some interviewers stay almost completely silent through the presentation — asking no technical questions and only checking your role on the project at the very end. Do not read the silence as either positive or negative; drive the depth yourself, pause to invite questions, and make sure you surface the hardest technical decisions without waiting to be asked.
Preparation
Build a 3-slide deep-dive deck: (1) one-slide motivation + result, (2) one-slide method, (3) one-slide evaluation. Rehearse the 5-minute walk-through with a peer.
Pre-write answers to the 8 most likely drill-downs (dataset, baselines, significance, ablations, failure modes, scaling, generalization, Roblox-application).
Be ready to draw the architecture or the key equation on the whiteboard without notes.
Rehearse the Roblox-application bridge specifically for each prep target — most candidates miss this and lose the close.
