类型:qbank
Meta's classic 45-min BQ round. Heavy on project-deepening: ambiguity, conflict, most-proud project, role models, self-improvement. L6+ candidates face a markedly different bar focused on org-level scope and influence-without-authority.
Requirements
Reported question backbone (E5 and below):
Ambiguity — "How do you deal with ambiguity?" — pick a project where requirements/direction were unclear; show how you broke the problem down and drove forward.
Conflict — "How do you deal with conflicts?" — interviewer commonly pauses mid-answer and probes further; signal collaboration over avoidance or escalation.
Most-proud project — not just what you built, but why it mattered and your specific contribution.
Role model — usually with an intern/early-career framing: pick a colleague you admire and articulate the trait.
Self-improvement — clear-eyed answer about edges you're still growing; not faux-humility.
Additional common prompts: cross-team project, failed project, hard-to-collaborate teammate, giving constructive feedback, mentoring growth.
Cross-functional leadership — bring more than one example and be ready to switch stories when the interviewer asks for an alternative.
L6+ shift
L6 BQ is reportedly a different round even though questions look similar:
Scope & Impact — only cross-team / cross-org examples register. Single-team stories read as L5.
Influence without authority — how you got EM / PM / other Staff engineers aligned without reporting lines.
Decision-making under ambiguity — mature trade-off reasoning, not gut calls.
People & org impact — growing seniors into staff, changing team engineering bar / culture.
Failure stories at L6 = org-level failures: wrong architectural direction, underestimated cross-team cost. Emphasis on systemic fixes, not patches.
Notes
E5+ reports stress "leadership" weight in the BQ — bring at least 2-3 cross-team examples.
This round coexists with the new AI-Oriented BQ round (post-Apr-16). Candidates scheduled in the new loop may get either or both; do not drop the classic backbone.
Some BQ slots are run by EMs and turn into project deep-dives — expect 3-5 follow-ups on a single story.
Interviewers may reject the first example as insufficiently differentiated and ask for another. Prepare multiple cross-functional leadership stories with distinct scopes and outcomes.
Preparation
Build a story matrix: 6-8 stories × these axes (ambiguity, conflict, impact, failure, mentorship, push-back, leadership). Each story should hit ≥3 axes.
For L6+: re-cast every story toward org-level scope. "My team" → "three teams across two orgs"; "I shipped" → "I aligned the orgs to ship."
Pre-rehearse the silent-pause behavior: when the interviewer says "let me think about it," don't fill the silence — wait for the follow-up.
Read the L6 BQ debrief end-to-end if targeting Staff.
